Even the cleanest earlobes will become irritated if your jewellery is not clean. If you have followed the guidelines on proper ear stretching , you should be able to take out your plugs whenever you feel like it! Stretching is slow and the goal is to NOT hurt your ears in the process.
Just follow your regular routine and take out your plugs when you feel they need cleaning, clean them, clean your earlobes and massage them properly, and put them back in. Once your ears have fully healed you should look at cleaning your plugs and stretches a couple of times a week as a standard, but more if you feel they need them. What your earlobes need most is moisture, so make sure you avoid any products containing alcohol or peroxide, as well as any type of antibacterial products that will likely hurt your earlobes!
Not only are these products very harsh on the skin, but the chemicals that aim to kill bacteria tend to dehydrate and aggravate the skin on your stretched ears too which can make them sore and inflamed. Also, something that not many people realise is that you should avoid moving, or spinning your plugs and tunnels in your ears because you increase the risk for injury, irritation, and infection.
As you move the jewelry, you can transfer new bacteria from your hands and open up the skin or healing wounds, which can lead to irritation and infection very quickly. This means you need to clean them on a daily basis. Daily soaking with a sterile saline wash for at least 10 minutes will help avoid infections and scarring.
Soaking is easy: remove your jewellery and submerge your earlobes into a clean glass or porcelain container filled with saline solution. We'd recommend using NeilMed sterile saline wound wash in the fine mist. Stretching is no exception.
When you stretch a muscle, your body responds by increasing blood flow to that area. The blood vessels around the targeted muscle widen to allow more blood to flow through, and your heart starts pumping more blood. Research has shown that static stretching activates your parasympathetic nervous system and inhibits activation of your sympathetic nervous system. Your parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for your rest and digestion functions. It can also help induce feelings of calmness and relaxation.
Endorphins are chemicals produced by your central nervous system and pituitary gland that function as neurotransmitters. They have greater pain-relieving effects than morphine and cause a feeling of euphoria when they bind with receptors in your brain. However, according to a perspective , stretching may help reduce menstruation pain.
There are many benefits to stretching your muscles regularly. Regularly stretching may help improve your flexibility , especially if you live a sedentary lifestyle.
Your flexibility naturally decreases as part of the aging process, but stretching may help slow down this process. Stretching causes short-term improvements in circulation by relaxing your blood vessels and increasing the amount of blood your heart pumps.
Static stretching activates your parasympathetic nervous system. Activating this branch of your nervous system may help alleviate the psychological effects of stress. Two weeks before your first stretch, apply Emu oil around the perimeter of the piercing you want to stretch.
Apply one drop of oil to the front and back of the piercing twice daily and massage into skin. When you are ready to insert the stretching taper after the two weeks of using Emu oil daily , apply a warm NOT hot compress to the piercing for several minutes. Wash the area to be stretched with glycerin soap and rinse well. Pat the area dry. If my hair gets too stretched, I mist with water before twisting to bring definition back or transition into a stretched bun or up-do.
Should you stretch for trims? I am not the stylist that believes that you HAVE to flat iron for a trim, but if you are ok with occasionally wearing your hair straight, straight hair does not camouflage your ends, so you will always get the most accurate trim.
For clients who simply do not wear flat ironed styles, I at least recommend trimming from a blow-dried state if you have a lot of shrinkage as you will truly focus on trimming visible ends and eliminating them from traveling up the strand vs only creating shape. I only recommend trimming in a natural state for looser textures. Often times, when clients see their hair in a blow dried or flat ironed, stretched state it motivates them to utilize my stretching technique throughout as they are truly able to see if their hair is in a good or bad condition that they typically cannot see in a wash and go state.
What are some stretched styles you can wear? Stretched styles are any styles in which your hair is not allowed to dry in its natural texture, but is allowed to dry with a somewhat stretched texture. This does NOT mean that you have to apply heat to your hair or blow dry it out. Twist outs, braid outs, twist and rod sets, corn rows, updos, blow outs, flat ironed styles etc. Be careful with any styles that involve heat. Bantu knots and rod sets protective styles but technically not stretched as these styles typically tighten the texture of the hair.
