If the plot seems odd so far, you will probably find yourself in a few seizures by the end. In the first episode, a TV-headed robot sprouts out of an anxiety-fueled horn that grown on Naota's head. After an amazing battle, this robot comes to live with Naota and does his laundry. Things like this happen every day in the world of FLCL.
Unfortunately, this may be a bit too much for some. But those who enjoy it will be thoroughly rewarded by the cleverly weird plot advancements and hilarious visual gags. And if you sift through it all, you'll find something even more amazing: a wonderful story of growing up that, despite it's giant robots, is moving and easy to relate to.
Kids who want to be adults, adults who can't grow up. These heavy topics line this gorgeous show and add a stirring quality to it. Besides the content of the show itself, the production of FLCL is absolutely mindblowing. Sickly slick animation coupled with an amazing musical backdrop provided by Japanese punk-rockers The Pillows proves to be a winning combination. The English dub is very impressive as well, especially for Haruko. And while i'm not exactly advocating piracy, i would suggest going to whatever lengths you need to see FLCL.
FLCL has affected me more than any other movie or show i've ever seen, animated or otherwise. Those who lack the open mind to filter through the madness will find the show to be quirky if nothing else.
But on every level, FLCL is a truly mind-blowing achievement. Oh, and you may be wondering about the title. No one else knows either. Details Edit. Fully aware of these mechanics even poking fun at the idea that she's a figment of Naota's imagination , Haruko uses this to toy with him, like a cat with a mouse. But despite Naota's wariness of her, she represents something outside of his boring home life.
Like the show itself, Haruko brings unpredictability into his life, as every episode brings some new scenario that almost defies analysis: You could watch each episode multiple times and still be left in the cold as to what it "means" or what, on a story level, the hell is actually happening.
Haruko's meddling makes the show increasingly frantic, as innocuous baseball matches turn into a setup for the apocalypse, high school stage productions turn into battle grounds for giant bug robots, or characters simply get blown away by machine guns to walk away just fine. What's real and what's metaphor eventually stops mattering, all that's left is to go by how it makes you feel usually, confused. Like the teens at its center, it's defiant of authority, so often rejecting genre convention that trying to categorize it is a waste of time.
It's not strictly action, not strictly comedy, not really a mecha anime or any one thing -- even to call it surrealist feels like too restrictive a term. At its very core it represents the necessary rebellion of adolescence, the beginning of a path towards independence.

Did we mention the robots keep springing from Naota's head? Hanging out by the river, no one would suspect Mamimi is a girl with a dark past. She's been obsessed with a videogame. There's been a string of fires around town. If that's not enough, there's something growing inside Naota's head.
With a robot and an alien at home, Naota tries to at least have a normal school life. The class is putting on a play, and Naota is playing a cat. He's sprouted cat ears from his head.
Class president Ninamori's been chosen to play the lead. Though he's carried around his brother's bat, Naota has never hit anything. Now his brother's gone, it's Naota's turn to prove his worth. The baseball team doesn't seem to be doing so well.
What is Haruko doing playing for the other team? Mabase is safe for now, but there's a new kind of danger. Naota finds himself in the midst of a survival game, with Haruko on his team.
