The next year, he landed in Lubbock, Texas. The Red Raiders had been mired in mediocrity for years, but under Leach never finished below. After the acrimonious end of his tenure at Texas Tech, he was out of coaching for two years before being hired by Washington State, another program that had been languishing. The Cougars won only 12 games in his first three seasons, but went from Washington State finished this season, including a seventh straight loss to rival Washington.
While Leach was regularly able to beat Pac North rivals Stanford and Oregon at Wazzu, his only victory in the Apple Cup was in the first one he coached. Mullen was one of the most successful coaches in the history of the program, raising expectations in Starkville — the small town in east Mississippi affectionately known as Starkvegas around the SEC — for a team that has usually finished near the bottom of the SEC West. Mississippi State has reached a bowl game in 10 straight seasons.
Mississippi State will now turn to Leach to take that next step. In a separate lawsuit in , Leach accused Tech of breach of contract but never got his day in court. He lost his bid for monetary damages on the basis that Tech had sovereign immunity that protected it from being successfully sued for damages as a state institution. This time, the lawsuit is about the Texas Public Information Act and whether Leach's investigator is getting public documents he's entitled to get from Tech.
Dolcefino's firm in Houston, Dolcefino Consulting, filed suit against Tech in January , seeking to compel Tech to produce those records associated with Leach's termination. Two attorneys in Dallas, Julie Pettit and Michael Hurst, are litigating the battle in court on behalf of Dolcefino Consulting, which is working on behalf of Leach.
Leach, 59, declined comment, deferring to Dolcefino and the attorneys. His website has posted provocative video commentaries on the Tech case, including a video posted July 28 in which Leach rips Tech. Tech is now trying to claw back those records through the court, saying they were privileged records and that all copies should be destroyed. Dolcefino also said Tech tried to drastically overcharge him for record production, withheld documents responsive to his requests and even destroyed such records.
In Leach's case, the break neck speed in which this all came to head works against him. Everyone knows that Leach is sort of crazy; with the season done except for the bowl game, why give chances for former players, or even fans to back up the man that has created a cult following out in the Texas Panhandle? And again, it sure must be nice to save , bucks in the process of getting rid of a perceived nuisance. All of this leads to another, perhaps more fundamental question.
Are the days of untouchable coaches done for, at least in Big XII country? Without running throughout the entire history of the Big XII, two other AD's come to mind as relevant to this discussion. First, ask any Nebraska fan what they thought of Steve Pederson, and you should set aside time to listen for a while.
Firing Frank Solich divided Husker nation, and the Callahan years where anything but peaceful. Beyond the decisions Pederson made, a common refrain among a particular section of Husker nation was that Pederson didn't understand Nebraska culture, and the hiring of Callahan was solid proof that this was the case.
Without speaking for all Husker fans, certainly a notable group of them see the Pederson seasons as lost years. Holder has been seen as an overall success, in the state and by outsiders. Boone Pickens stadium is a thing of beauty, the Cowboys are competing in both football and basketball, and donations have never been better.
However, Holder's "iron grip," as some locals put it, has caused many an uproar in each of his specific moves. Turn on desktop notifications for breaking stories about interest? Comments 0.
